When That Sweet Tooth Strikes, Reach for Fruit Instead

Dec 14, 2023

As a nutrition coach and fitness trainer, I often get questions about how to tame sugar cravings the healthy way. My advice? When a dessert urge hits, go for fresh fruit instead of candy. Fruits like pineapple and cantaloupe provide sweetness with far more nutritional benefits. Here’s why they make a better choice:

Fruits Give You Fiber and Micronutrients

Candy offers little more than empty calories and sugar. But whole fruits deliver fiber, disease-fighting antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and polyphenols that protect your body in ways candy simply can’t match. The nutrients in pineapples and melons support everything from immunity to digestion. You just don’t get those perks from a candy bar!

The Sugar in Fruit Comes with Benefits

While fruits do contain natural sugars, they also provide metabolic benefits. For example, pineapple has the enzyme bromelain which aids digestion. Cantaloupe is high in carotenoids associated with lower heart disease risk. The sugar in whole fruit is balanced out by positive compounds candy lacks.

Fruits Have a Low Glycemic Load

Even though fruit has sugars, its glycemic load tends to be lower and the sugar absorbs more slowly thanks to the fiber. This prevents unhealthy blood sugar spikes. Candy, however, causes rapid glycemic spikes that promote inflammation, weight gain and cravings for more sweets later.

Giving In to Your Sweet Tooth? Pick Fruit!

When an irresistible dessert craving strikes, I always recommend fresh fruit first. Its sweetness satisfies with nutrition Candy can’t match. Pineapples, melons, berries, mangos, pears...Mother Nature provides so many deliciously healthy options! Curb cravings the smart way.
